I am a single mother of 2: Olivia & Claire / former welfare recipient myself who knows firsthand how hard it can be going back into the work force. There is a definite stigma and shame that goes with the word welfare. I moved to Miami from Michigan when I was pregnant. My goal was to finish college so in 1998 I received my bachelor's degree in International Relations from Florida International University. I thought my life had finally taken a direction when it went from bad to worse. Student loans were due, child support came to a halt and I was forced to apply for welfare. I was put in the welfare to work program. I complained that the jobs didn't pay enough and I wanted a job in entertainment so I was referred to Jeff Rosenberg to help me with my resume. I had always wanted to do charity work but thought later in life when I was successful and could afford to I would go back to this idea.   One day I decided to call Jeff and ran the charity idea by him. He thought it was a great idea and we brainstormed to come up with an idea and a name. Jeff became my mentor. With his help my dream became a reality. There was an attorney in town named Russell Jacobs that helped low income people that qualified form corporations and all the next steps I would need to become a charity/501c3 non-profit organization.  In September 1999 The Look for Success was born. The Fay Parkin Foundation gave me first donation/grant. Estee Lauder/The Estee Lauder Companies gave the charity its first cosmetic donation and have stuck by The Look for Success since donating all the make-up for the makeovers and women/clients. It was a long road with many hurdles. My Mom and I were able to work through our differences and she now runs The Look for Success Michigan. I love what I am doing and please don't ever give up on your dream. To date The Look for Success has helped over 8000 women and teens in Miami, Michigan and Los Angeles. Karlene Goedde -Programs Director of the Michigan Office (Founders Mom) launched the Michigan office 4 years ago focusing on women suffering from domestic violence, the elderly and women diagnosed with cancer and cancer survivors. Her heart remains close to the women recently diagnosed with cancer and the women who have overcome cancer after losing both her sister, Leslie and husband Robert to cancer not too long ago.
